How can you change career when you don’t know what you want?

The single biggest obstacle you’ll face when starting on career change

change career optionsWhen you are thinking about how you will change career, practical things come to mind:

  • Do I have the time?
  • Can I afford it?
  • What will the dog think?

It’s natural for a grown-up responsible person like you to think about these things. But practical things can always be sorted out…once you know what you want.

The biggest block for mid-life career changers

And this is the biggest block for mid-life career changers. You know you want to do something different with your life, you have vaguely explored various ideas but you are left with –

“I don’t know what I want to do”

Going back to the university careers department isn’t going to help, unless you want to go back to graduate level jobs. And you have a mindset that is driving you forwards, not backwards!

Speaking to friends and colleagues might not help. You can’t say to your colleagues that you are bored with what you are doing. Explaining you no longer feel fulfilled by your job will have them label you as uncommitted, weird or flaky.

Even if you have reached a point in your career where you can consider a change, you’ll be expected to ‘apply for promotion’ or ‘transition to retirement’. You can change, but only in line with corporate procedures! You can’t, by definition, change career.

If you tell your friends or, even worse, your loved ones, you want to change career, that will really rock their boat. You feel dissatisfied, puzzled and wanting more. They feel disturbed, unsafe and get cranky. You can see how they might try to put you off your ideas of career change.

Knowing what you want

So, here’s the problem. You need to be able to explore career change without rocking the boat.

You need to get crystal clear about what you want, not just for your career but for your life.

You need to find out what speaks to your heart, what nourishes your soul and what makes your life fizz.

Then you can put life with fizz into your career.
